Baylor Bear Habitat: Your Complete Guide to Judge Indy, Judge Belle & Baylor's Live Mascots

American black bear in a natural water setting similar to the bear habitat at Baylor University in Waco Texas

If you've spent any time on Baylor's campus, you've probably heard someone say "have you seen the bears yet?" That's not a metaphor. Baylor University has two living, breathing American black bears on campus — Judge Indy and Judge Belle — and they're one of the most genuinely cool things in Waco that students somehow don't always know about when they first arrive.

The Baylor Bear Habitat is free, open every day, and draws an estimated 250,000 visitors a year. Whether you're a new student figuring out your campus, hosting your family for a weekend visit, or just looking for something different to do on a Tuesday afternoon, here's everything you need to know.

What Is the Baylor Bear Habitat?

The Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat — named for its benefactors — is a state-of-the-art facility on Baylor's main campus that's home to the university's live bear mascots. It was built in 2005, achieved full AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accreditation in 2021, and is the only university bear habitat in the country with that distinction. In plain terms: it meets the same animal care standards as major accredited zoos.

The habitat features large enclosures with trees, climbing structures, and a pool — designed so the bears can behave naturally while visitors watch through floor-to-ceiling windows at close range. You can often see the bears playing, swimming, foraging, or lounging within a few feet of the viewing area.

Meet Judge Indy and Judge Belle

The current residents are Judge Indy (born January 24, 2023) and Judge Belle (born January 29, 2023) — American black bear cousins who arrived at Baylor in 2023 after being rescued from a wildlife park in Idaho where they were born in human care. Because they were raised around people, they can't be released into the wild, so they have a permanent home here.

By early 2025, Indy weighed roughly 240 pounds and Belle around 232 pounds — and they're still growing. Both bears were still in their first few years when they arrived, which means campus got to watch them go from small cubs to the full-grown residents they are now. Follow @baylorbearhabitat on Instagram if you want regular updates and photos — the habitat team posts consistently.

Their names carry meaning:

  • Judge Indy honors Baylor's founding in Independence, TX — students call him Indy for short
  • Judge Belle was named for the McLane Carillon bells in Pat Neff Hall (she reportedly chirps around feeding time)

They replaced the previous resident Judge Lady, who served at Baylor for 21 years before being relocated when the cubs arrived.

A Brief History of Baylor's Bears

Baylor's bear tradition is over a century old. In 1914, students voted to make the bear the official mascot — beating out the buffalo, antelope, frog, and (yes) the ferret. Three years later in 1917, the 107th Engineers of the Army's 32nd Division brought a bear to Waco from Camp MacArthur during WWI and donated it to the university when they shipped out.

Live bears attended Baylor football games in person for decades. They eventually moved full-time to an on-campus habitat in the early 2000s to reduce the stress of game-day crowds, and the current purpose-built facility opened in 2005. Baylor is the only major university in the U.S. that keeps a live bear mascot on campus — and the only one with a habitat that's AZA-accredited, which puts it in the same category as professional zoos.

A $2 million renovation project launched in 2026 will expand and improve the facility, so the experience is only going to get better in the coming years.

Hours, Location & Parking

Hours: Daily, 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission: Free Location: Near the intersection of 5th Street and M.P. Daniel Esplanade on Baylor's main campus

Before you go, check @baylorbearhabitat on Instagram — the habitat team posts when the bears are off-exhibit for maintenance, veterinary care, or inclement weather. Worth a quick check before making the trip.

Parking options nearby:

  • Lot #23 — Bill Daniel Student Center, 1311 S 5th St (closest to the habitat)
  • 5th Street Garage — 1201 S 5th St (covered, timed)
  • Dutton Avenue Garage — 1111 S University Parks Dr

If you live at 19Eleven Apartments at 1911 S 8th Street, the habitat is roughly 0.7 to 1.0 mile away — a 12 to 15 minute walk through campus or a 3-minute drive. It's easy to tack onto any campus run.

When to Visit

Best times:

  • Weekday mornings (10–11 a.m.): Bears are active, crowds are thin, and parking is easy
  • Late afternoon (4–5 p.m.): Bears often get energetic again around feeding time
  • Cooler months (October–March): Bears are noticeably more active when Waco's heat lets up

Avoid:

  • Saturday midday during football season or Family Weekend — parking and foot traffic both get difficult
  • Summer midday — the Texas heat slows the bears (and visitors) down considerably

Weekday visits in the fall semester hit the sweet spot: the campus is beautiful, weather is cooler, and you can spend as long as you want without crowds.

What to Expect When You Get There

The habitat is designed for close-up viewing. You're standing just a few feet from the bears through large glass windows — close enough to see them interact with enrichment items, splash in the pool, or wrestle with each other. It doesn't feel like a distant zoo exhibit where the animals are barely visible.

Indy and Belle are still young enough to be curious and playful, which makes each visit different. The habitat also changes seasonally — bears are more active in fall and spring, slower in summer, and sometimes less visible when weather brings them inside.

The viewing areas are ADA-accessible and stroller-friendly. Educational programs for school groups are available by appointment through bearhabitat.web.baylor.edu.

Professional veterinary care is provided by Texas A&M University veterinarians — another detail that shows the level of care involved.

Making the Most of a Campus Visit

The bear habitat pairs naturally with other stops nearby. From the habitat, you're within easy walking distance of:

  • Pat Neff Hall — Baylor's most photographed building, and the home of the McLane Carillon bells that Belle was named for
  • Baylor Sciences Building atrium — open to the public, genuinely impressive architecture
  • Baylor Bookstore (Barnes & Noble) — 1311 S 5th St, right next to Lot #23

For Family Weekend, combining the bear habitat with a campus walk and lunch nearby makes for an easy two-hour visit that doesn't cost anything. Most parents who visit for the first time are genuinely surprised — live bears on a university campus isn't something you see anywhere else.

For Students at 19Eleven

If you're at 19Eleven on S 8th Street, you're already closer to the Baylor Bear Habitat than many students who live in residence halls on the north side of campus. The route runs about 12–15 minutes on foot through campus — the same path you'd take toward Moody Library or the Ferrell Center.

The bear habitat is easy to overlook when you're in the middle of a semester. But it's also one of those things that makes living near Baylor feel genuinely distinctive. When you have friends visiting from another city and they ask "what do you actually do here?", taking them to see two American black bears living on a university campus makes a strong impression.
