Christmas in Waco: Holiday Lights, Events & Winter Activities for Baylor Students

Most Baylor students either go home for the holidays or write off Waco's December as a dead period. That's a mistake. Waco runs a legitimate holiday season — think Cameron Park Zoo completely lit up from Thanksgiving through New Year's, a free downtown festival with snow tubing, the historic Suspension Bridge draped in lights, and a trolley tour through Waco's most decorated neighborhoods. Wild Lights at Cameron Park Zoo

Wild Lights is the headliner — and the one that surprises most students. Cameron Park Zoo transforms into one of the most elaborate Christmas light displays in Central Texas, running Thursday through Sunday from late November through December 30.

What to expect: Millions of lights covering the entire zoo grounds, festive food and drinks, a Santa meet-and-greet, and seasonal photo ops. It's a legitimate evening out, not just a stroll past a few strands of bulbs.

Waco Wonderland at Heritage Square

Waco Wonderland is the free downtown festival that turns Heritage Square into a full winter carnival for a weekend in early December. The event is city-run, family-friendly, and completely walkable from 19Eleven (about 1.5 miles down Austin Ave toward downtown).

What's there: Carnival rides (wristband required, ~$10-15), fireworks, a vendor market with local goods and food, Santa photos, and snow tubing. If you haven't done snow tubing in Texas before, it's exactly what it sounds like — manufactured snow on an artificial slope, but genuinely fun in a group.

Combine Waco Wonderland with dinner downtown (Common Grounds is 0.8 miles from 19Eleven on S 8th, or hit the Franklin Ave corridor for more options) to make it a full evening.

Waco Suspension Bridge Holiday Lighting

If you haven't walked the Suspension Bridge yet, December is the best excuse to finally do it. The 1870 suspension bridge is illuminated with lights each evening throughout December, and the walk along the Brazos Riverwalk underneath it has additional seasonal decorations.

From 19Eleven, the Suspension Bridge is about 1.3 miles — a 25-minute walk through downtown via Austin Ave. It's free, there's no ticketing, and it's the kind of low-key evening that works for any group size.

Waco Trolley Christmas Lights Tour

For a more structured group experience, the Waco Trolley runs a guided Christmas lights tour through the city's most decorated neighborhoods in December. It's a ticketed experience and one of the more unusual ways to spend an evening — comfortable seats, a guide narrating the route, and you don't have to deal with parking.

It's the kind of thing that works well for a group of six or eight splitting the ticket cost. Not the cheapest night out, but genuinely different from anything else in Waco.

Lights of West (Road Trip Option)

If you have a car and want to get out of town for an evening, the Lights of West is a drive-through Christmas lights display about 20 miles north of Waco in West, TX. It's one of the most popular drive-through displays in Central Texas, and the short drive makes it a natural road trip for an evening when you're looking for something beyond the city.

West is also home to the Czech Stop bakery (famous for kolaches) — so combine the lights with a kolache run and you've got an easy two-hour round trip from 19Eleven.

Holiday Food and Drinks

December in Waco means seasonal menus at most of the regulars:

Staying in Waco Over Winter Break

If you're one of the students who sticks around for a chunk of December and January, the city is actually more peaceful than most of the semester. Campus quiets down, the usual crowds disappear from restaurants, and you have the city's holiday events to yourself.

Baylor's spring semester starts mid-January 2027. Students staying over winter break get: zero parking issues, short waits at any restaurant, Wild Lights running through Dec 30, and the full holidays in a city that actually celebrates them.
