Things to Do in Downtown Waco: A Student's Weekend Guide
Most "things to do in downtown Waco" guides are written for tourists doing a Magnolia pilgrimage. They'll tell you about the Silos, recommend Magnolia Table, and send you on your way. But if you actually live here — especially as a Baylor student — you need a guide to things you can do every weekend without blowing your budget or getting bored.
Downtown Waco has a lot more going on than Chip and Joanna. Here's what to do with your weekends when you're not studying.
Free Things to Do in Downtown Waco
Walk the Brazos Riverwalk
The Riverwalk is Waco's best free activity, period. The paved trail runs along the Brazos River and connects to Cameron Park, one of the largest municipal parks in Texas. Walk, jog, bike, or just sit by the water and decompress. The Waco Suspension Bridge — a 475-foot historic landmark — makes for a solid photo op and a scenic starting point.
On warm evenings, the riverfront gets busy with joggers and groups hanging out. It's the kind of low-key activity that costs nothing and never gets old.
Explore the Murals
Downtown Waco is packed with large-scale murals that turn ordinary buildings into open-air galleries. Spend an afternoon walking the streets around Austin Avenue and Washington Avenue to find them. It's free, it's Instagram-worthy, and you'll discover new ones every few months as artists add to the collection.
First Friday Art Walk
On the first Friday of each month, downtown galleries and shops stay open late with free art shows, live music, and food vendors. It's one of the best cheap things to do in Waco and a great way to discover local artists and businesses. No cover charge, no reservations needed — just show up and wander.
Armstrong Browning Library
This one's technically on campus, but it borders downtown and deserves a mention. Free admission, stunning stained glass windows, and one of the most beautiful interiors in any Texas building. It's a study spot, a photo destination, and a genuine cultural experience all in one.
Saturday Morning: The Farmers Market
The Waco Downtown Farmers Market at Bridge Street Plaza (200 E Bridge Street) runs every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. year-round (closing at noon in July and August). Wednesday evening markets run seasonally from 5 to 8 p.m.
This isn't your average produce stand. You'll find local honey, fresh bread, handmade soaps, tamales, breakfast tacos, and live music. Parking is free on surrounding streets. Get there by 9:30 for the best selection before the crowds hit.
It's the kind of Saturday morning ritual that makes you feel like a local — and it's walkable from 19Eleven's location near downtown.
Where to Eat Downtown (Student Budget Edition)
You don't need to spend $30 a plate to eat well in downtown Waco. Here are the spots that deliver on flavor without wrecking your wallet:
Guess Family Barbecue — some of the best BBQ in Central Texas, and that's saying something. The brisket sells out, so go early. Cash or card, no pretense, just excellent smoked meat.
Milo All Day — a café that works for brunch, lunch, or coffee. The menu is creative without being overpriced, and the atmosphere is calm enough to linger without feeling rushed.
Cafe Homestead — a farm-to-table spot with hearty portions. Their breakfast menu is a weekend staple.
Pivovar Czech Gastropub — if you want something different, Pivovar serves Czech-inspired food with craft beer. The kolaches are legit.
Shorty's Pizza Shack — the definitive Waco college pizza joint. Cheap, good, and exactly what you want at the end of a long day.
Union Hall — a food hall with multiple local vendors under one roof. Ramen, tacos, burgers, and more. Good for groups who can't agree on what to eat.
Things to Do in Waco Besides Magnolia
Look, the Silos are fine. But after you've been once, you don't need to go back every weekend. Here's what else downtown Waco has to offer:
Fabled Bookshop & Café
An independent bookshop at 215 S 4th Street with a cozy café inside. Browse the shelves, grab a coffee, and settle into a chair. It's one of the best study spots in Waco and a great place to kill a rainy afternoon.
Spice Village
A massive indoor market on Franklin Avenue filled with over 80 local vendors selling everything from vintage clothing to handmade candles to hot sauce. It's free to browse and you'll always find something weird and interesting.
Dr Pepper Museum
Waco is the birthplace of Dr Pepper, and the museum at 300 S 5th Street is a fun one-time visit. Student tickets are affordable, and the old-fashioned soda fountain at the end is worth it alone.
Waco Hippodrome
A beautifully restored 1914 theater that hosts movies, concerts, and comedy shows. Check their calendar for live events — they regularly book touring acts and film screenings at student-friendly prices. It's one of the best things to do in downtown Waco on a Friday or Saturday night.
Martin Museum of Art
Free admission. Located on the Baylor campus, this small but well-curated museum rotates exhibits regularly. All Baylor students can visit with their student ID.
Mayborn Museum Complex
All Baylor students get free admission with a valid student ID (except special exhibits). Natural history, cultural exhibits, and a discovery center — it's more engaging than you'd expect.
Outdoor Activities Near Downtown
Cameron Park
Over 400 acres of trails, cliffs, and river access. Cameron Park connects to the Riverwalk and offers mountain biking, hiking, and some of the best views in Waco. Miss Falls is a popular photo spot. It's all free.
Brazos Park East
Rent a kayak or paddleboard on the Brazos River. It's affordable, and the stretch near downtown is calm enough for beginners. A solid group activity on a warm Saturday afternoon.
Waco Suspension Bridge at Sunset
The bridge is always open, always free, and always looks best around golden hour. Walk across, take in the view, and enjoy one of the most photographed spots in Waco.
Budget Tips for Weekend Fun
- Check Baylor campus events. The university hosts free concerts, movie screenings, and activities almost every weekend during the semester. Follow @bayloractivities for the schedule.
- Go early. Farmers market, barbecue spots, and popular brunch places all have peak windows. Showing up 30 minutes early saves you from lines and sold-out items.
- Walk or bike. Downtown Waco is compact. If you live at 19Eleven on S 8th Street, most of these spots are a short rideshare away — or walkable on a nice day.
- Split meals. Portions at Guess Family BBQ and Cafe Homestead are generous. Split a plate and save.
Live Close to the Action
