Can I see a model unit or the actual unit I would rent?

Water pressure — turn on faucets and flush toilets

All lights and outlets work

Appliances are in working condition

Windows open/close and lock properly

No signs of pests, mold, or water damage

Cell signal strength in the unit

Noise levels — listen for neighbors, traffic, etc.

Closet and storage space is adequate

They will not show you the actual unit — only a "model"

Hidden fees not mentioned until lease signing

Pressure to sign immediately without time to review

Poor maintenance on common areas (broken lights, dirty pool, etc.)

Negative reviews mentioning the same issues repeatedly

No written lease or vague lease terms

Compare total costs between apartments (rent + fees + utilities)

Read the full lease before signing

Ask about the move-in timeline and availability

Confirm roommate arrangements if applicable

Take notes on each place while it is fresh
