A Walking Guide to Baylor's South Campus: Everything Within Reach of S 8th Street
If you're apartment hunting near Baylor, you've probably noticed that location matters more than almost anything else on your lease. South campus puts you closer to classrooms, food, coffee, and trails than most students realize — and S 8th Street is the spine that connects it all.
This walking guide covers everything within reach of Baylor's south campus in Waco, from the coffee shop literally next door to the 26-mile trail system you can reach on foot. Whether you're a freshman scoping out off-campus life or a parent trying to understand the neighborhood, here's what the area actually looks like on the ground.
Your Starting Point: S 8th Street
S 8th Street runs north-south along the western edge of Baylor's campus, connecting the residential neighborhoods south of campus to downtown Waco. It's one of the quieter corridors near campus — tree-lined, mostly residential, and walkable in every direction.
At 1911 S 8th Street, 19Eleven Apartments sits right in the middle of this stretch. From here, you're a 10-minute walk to most campus buildings, a 5-minute walk to coffee, and a short stroll to the Waco Riverwalk. That's the kind of proximity that eliminates the need for a parking pass (and the headaches that come with it — Baylor students consistently cite parking as one of their biggest campus frustrations).
Coffee and Ice Cream Steps from Your Door
The stretch of S 8th Street near Baylor's south campus has become a small hub for students, and two spots anchor it.
Common Grounds (1123 S 8th St) is the undisputed gathering place for Baylor students. This converted bungalow has cozy rooms, a massive outdoor patio with string lights, and a menu that goes well beyond drip coffee — think Italian sodas, specialty lattes, and their famous Cowboy Coffee. They're open until 11 PM on weeknights and weekends, which makes them a solid late-night study option too. If you've visited Baylor, you've probably already been here. If you haven't, it'll become your second living room.
Heritage Creamery (1125 S 8th St) is literally next door. They make all their ice cream from scratch using local ingredients, and their fresh-baked cookies are a campus legend. Open daily from 1 PM, with extended hours until 10 PM on weekends. It's the kind of place you end up at after every evening walk.
Both are a straight walk north on S 8th — no car needed, no parking lot to navigate.
Campus Buildings Within Walking Distance
Living on Baylor's south campus means you're closer to several key buildings than students in some of the dorms.
Paul L. Foster Campus for Business and Innovation (1621 S 3rd St) is Baylor's flagship business school facility. It's about a 12-minute walk east from S 8th Street — shorter than the walk from North Village residence halls. If you're a Hankamer School of Business student, this matters more than almost any other factor in choosing where to live.
McLane Student Life Center (209 Speight Ave) is Baylor's 156,000-square-foot recreation center with a fitness center, indoor track, basketball courts, and group fitness classes. It's roughly a 10-minute walk from S 8th Street. Between the indoor pool and sports court at 19Eleven and the SLC's full gym, you've got fitness covered year-round without an extra membership.
Moody Memorial Library is Baylor's main library, with four floors of study space organized by noise level — from group collaboration areas to dead-silent individual carrels. About a 15-minute walk from south S 8th Street, or cut through campus for a more scenic route.
Armstrong Browning Library is one of the most beautiful study spaces in Texas. The stained glass windows and wood-paneled rooms feel more like a European cathedral than a college library. It's a 12-minute walk from south campus and almost never crowded.
Food Worth the Walk
You won't go hungry near Baylor's south campus in Waco. Beyond the S 8th Street staples, several restaurants are within easy walking distance.
Vitek's Market (1600 Speight Ave) has been a Waco institution since 1915. Their Gut Pack — a tray layered with Fritos, beans, rice, cheese, and your choice of meat — is basically required eating for Baylor students. It's a 15-minute walk from south campus and open Tuesday through Saturday (10:30 AM–6 PM, until 8 PM Friday and Saturday). Go before 11:30 to beat the lunch rush.
Cajun Craft (601 S 11th St) serves legit Cajun food — fried catfish, gumbo, boudin balls — in a casual setting just a few blocks from campus. It's one of those spots that flies under the radar for first-year students but becomes a go-to once you discover it.
Schmaltz's Sandwich Shop (105 S 5th St) started on Baylor's campus back in 1975 and has been feeding students fresh-baked bread sandwiches ever since. A short walk north toward downtown.
Head a bit further and you'll find Pivovar (320 S 8th St), a Czech restaurant and brewery where you eat alongside actual fermentation tanks. Great for a nicer meal or when parents are in town — and still walkable from south campus.
The Riverwalk Connection
One of the most underrated things near Baylor's south campus is how quickly you can reach the Waco Riverwalk on foot.
The Riverwalk is a 7-mile, lighted, paved trail that loops along both banks of the Brazos River, connecting three major areas: Baylor's campus near McLane Stadium, downtown Waco via the historic Suspension Bridge, and Cameron Park. The full downtown loop is 5.5 miles — perfect for a morning run or an evening bike ride.
From S 8th Street, you can reach the Riverwalk trailhead near McLane Stadium in about 15 minutes on foot. From there, head south to Cameron Park — over 400 acres with 26 miles of trails ranging from easy walks to technical mountain bike routes, plus disc golf, kayaking, and some of the best views in Waco. Or head north toward downtown for shops, food, and the Waco Farmers Market on Saturdays.
If you need outdoor space to stay sane during midterms, this trail system is a game-changer. And it starts practically at your doorstep.
What's Changing on South Campus
The Baylor south campus neighborhood is evolving fast, and 2026 is a pivotal year.
New 630-bed student housing is breaking ground in April 2026 at 7th Street and James Avenue, right next to campus. Developed by Parallel and The Deven Group, the 265-unit complex replaces the Seventh and James Baptist Church building (which has stood since the 1950s). Completion is expected by August 2028 — meaning more students, more foot traffic, and likely more businesses following the demand.
Kokernot Hall renovation wraps up in July 2026, completing Baylor's decade-long, $200 million residence hall renovation program. Every dorm built before 1960 will have been updated by the end of the cycle.
The Bill Daniel Student Center (the SUB) is in preliminary planning for renovations, though no timeline has been set.
The takeaway: south campus is getting more investment, more density, and more amenities. Living here now means you're getting in before the neighborhood fully transforms — and at current pricing rather than post-development rates.
Getting Around Without a Car
One of the biggest advantages of living on Baylor's south campus in Waco is how little you actually need a car.
- Walking: Most campus buildings are 10-15 minutes on foot from S 8th Street. Common Grounds and Heritage Creamery are under 10 minutes. The Riverwalk is 15 minutes.
- Baylor buses run regular routes connecting south campus to the rest of the university, with stops along Speight Avenue and S University Parks Drive.
- I-35 access is just a few minutes east if you do have a car. Weekend trips to Dallas (90 min) or Austin (100 min) are straightforward.
- Rideshare coverage in the campus area is solid, especially on weekends and game days.
You're not stranded. But you're also not burning money on a parking pass or circling lots for 20 minutes before class. That's the south campus advantage.
