Best Lunch Spots in Waco: A Baylor Student's Complete Guide

Group of students eating lunch together at a restaurant table in Waco

Figuring out where to get a good waco lunch isn't complicated — once you know where to look. The problem is that most guides assume you have a car, don't care about price, and have an hour to kill. Most Baylor students don't. You've got a 45-minute window between your 11am and 1pm classes, you want something real (not a vending machine), and you don't want to spend $20 doing it.

This guide covers every lunch spot worth knowing about near Baylor — organized by how close it is to campus, how much you'll spend, and what kind of mood you're in. If you're living on S 8th Street, you're already in a great position. Several of the best spots are a short walk or quick drive away.

The Closest Waco Lunch Spots to S 8th Street

If you're living at 19Eleven Apartments at 1911 S 8th St, these are your closest lunch options — all reachable without burning 20 minutes just getting there.

George's Restaurant (Speight Ave location) is the one Baylor students have been eating at since the 1930s. It's about 0.6 miles from 19Eleven — a quick drive or slow walk — and it serves the kind of honest, generous food that doesn't care if you're in sweats. Chicken-fried steak ($10.99), a solid burger around $9, and breakfast served all morning. It fills up fast on game days, but a regular weekday lunch takes less than 30 minutes.

Vitek's BBQ (1600 Speight Ave) is roughly 0.8 miles from 19Eleven and has been a Baylor student ritual since 1915. The Gut Pak — a styrofoam container of BBQ meats, beans, Fritos, pickles, onions, and processed cheese — was invented here. The half-order runs about $7.50 and is one of the most filling meals you'll find in Waco under $10. Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm.

Common Grounds (1123 S 8th St) is on the same street as 19Eleven, about 0.8 miles north. It's primarily a coffee shop, but it serves sandwiches, wraps, salads, and light lunch items in the $6–$12 range. If you want to eat and study in the same spot, this is the move. Open Monday through Friday 7am–11pm, weekends 8am–11pm.

Best Budget Waco Lunch (Under $10)

When you're watching your spending, these spots deliver the most food per dollar in the Waco lunch category.

Vitek's Gut Pak at $7.50 (half-order) is the obvious answer. It's not pretty, but it's legitimately filling and genuinely Waco. Few meals make a better impression on out-of-town friends visiting Baylor.

Schmaltz's Sandwich Shop has been making Waco's best sandwiches since 1975, originally on the Baylor campus itself before moving downtown. The downtown location (105 S 5th St, about 1.7 miles from 19Eleven) is open Monday through Friday, 10am–3pm only — lunch hours, full stop. Bread is baked fresh daily. Most sandwiches come in under $10. If you only have time to try one waco lunch spot that qualifies as a local institution, make it Schmaltz's.

Union Hall (720 Franklin Ave, about 1.5 miles away) is the right pick when you're going with a group that can't agree on cuisine. The food hall format means you can order from Jack Noodles (pho and banh mi), Wacool Tacos, or Captain Billy Whizzbang's burgers simultaneously and meet up at the communal tables. Most vendors run $8–$15 per person.

The Local Institutions

George's Restaurant

Open since the 1930s and still serving the same straightforward American diner food, George's is the place Baylor alumni come back to. The "Big O" schooner of beer is a game-day tradition. For lunch specifically, the chicken-fried steak and burger are the reliable picks. Order at the bar if there's a wait — it moves faster.

Schmaltz's Sandwich Shop

The original Schmaltz's opened on Baylor's campus in 1975. The campus location closed in 1982, but the downtown location at 105 S 5th St has been open since then. The Valley Mills location (1412 N Valley Mills Dr, ~3.5 miles from 19Eleven) has longer hours — Monday through Friday 10am–8pm, Saturday 10am–4pm — which is useful if you want a Schmaltz's sandwich after 3pm. The thing that sets it apart from every chain is the bread: baked fresh daily, crisp outside, airy inside.

Milo All Day

Milo All Day (1020 Franklin Ave) is what every "farm-to-table" restaurant aspires to be. Chef Corey's Southern-inspired menu changes seasonally, but the Barbacoa Breakfast Burrito is a fixture that Baylor students order for lunch without apology. Closed Tuesdays; otherwise open 10am–9pm. Lunch service runs until 3pm on weekdays. Expect to spend $12–$22. It fills up — arrive before noon if you want a seat without a wait.

Group Lunch and Special Occasion Options

Union Hall handles groups the way no single restaurant can. The communal setup means everyone picks what they want, you split up at the order windows, and you all end up at the same table. Good for groups of 6+ where tastes diverge. For Baylor students doing a group lunch before an afternoon class, it's the most frictionless option.

Casa do Brasil (1001 Webster Ave, about 1.5 miles) is for when someone is visiting and you want to show off. It's an upscale Brazilian churrascaria — gaucho chefs carve rotisserie-grilled meats tableside, and the salad bar has 50+ items. Lunch runs Monday through Friday, 11am–3pm. It's the best-value version of Brazilian steakhouse dining you'll find in Central Texas, especially at the lunch price point compared to dinner. Plan on $25–$35/person.

Harvest on 25th (2425 Colcord Ave, about 2.2 miles) is the true splurge pick. Farm-to-table, seasonally sourced, genuinely good. Lunch only, Monday through Friday, 11am–2pm. Reservations are worth it on weekdays. Expect $18–$28/person. This is the one you go to when you're celebrating something or want to take your parents somewhere that'll actually impress them.

Waco Lunch by Occasion

Before morning classes (under 11am): Common Grounds has grab-and-go options starting at 7am, and Vitek's opens at 7am as well.

Between classes (30–45 minutes): George's (quick table turnover, 0.6 miles from 19Eleven), Schmaltz's downtown (fast counter service, closes at 3pm), or Common Grounds sandwich.

Group of 4+ who can't agree: Union Hall, no question.

Visiting family: Casa do Brasil for a casual-splurge lunch, or Harvest on 25th if you want something farm-to-table and they're the kind of parents who read food sections.

Game days: Order in or go early. Most popular waco lunch spots around Baylor fill up by 11:30am on game days and stay packed through 1:30pm. Schmaltz's closes at 3pm so plan accordingly.
